3D Printing

Sculpt a dragon in software, prep it to print, and bring it into the world.

The real skill here is digital sculpting — you shape a dragon like digital clay, not with the boxes-and-measurements modeling people usually mean by "3D design." Dragons are organic, so you sculpt them. The thing beginners underestimate is the second half: print prep. A gorgeous sculpt that isn't watertight, hollowed, and split correctly just fails on the plate. This path front-loads sculpting but treats print prep as its own real stage.

Assume ~4-6 hours a week. Ramp to "I printed a dragon I made" is roughly 6-10 weeks.


Phase 0 — Setup ½ day

Phase 1 — Sculpting fundamentals 1-2 weeks

Don't touch dragons yet. Learn the brushes on simple forms first.

Goal: sculpt a believable animal head from a sphere. Don't move on until brushes feel natural.

Phase 2 — Sculpt an actual dragon 2-3 weeks

Follow one series start to finish. Pick one and don't hop around.

Sculpt body, neck, head, limbs, and wings as separate pieces — don't fight to keep it one mesh. Pose it once at the end.

Phase 3 — Print prep (the part that matters) 1-2 weeks

This is where a sculpt becomes a printable file. Study in this order.

1. Watertight / manifold + the checker workflow

2. Creature / mini-specific prep

3. Hollowing (saves resin, prevents cure-warp)

4. Splitting + keying (wings, tail, base printed separately)

Export STL (or 3MF). Run the 3D-Print Toolbox "Check All" until it reports zero errors before you open a slicer.

Phase 4 — Slice and print ongoing

Dragons want resin (MSLA) printing for the detail on scales and horns. The slicer (Lychee or Chitubox) is where you hollow, add drain holes, generate supports, and orient the model to hide support scars.

No printer yet? You can sculpt and prep through Phase 3 for free, then send an STL to a print service to validate the file before buying hardware.

Phase 5 — Optional accelerator: AI base meshes later

Once you can sculpt, AI image-to-3D can hand you a rough starting mesh so you're not blocking out anatomy from nothing. If you have a capable GPU, these run locally:

Honest caveat: generated meshes come out lumpy, dense, and not print-ready. They're base meshes you import into Blender and refine with the Phase 1-3 skills — a shortcut past the blank canvas, not a replacement for learning to sculpt. Worth it only after you can sculpt.

The one thing that trips everyone up: finish a full loop early. Sculpt something simple, prep it, slice it, print it — end to end — before chasing a masterpiece dragon. The pipeline lessons only stick once you've felt a print fail.

The essentials

Tablet: what a professional needs (and does an iPad work?)

Counterintuitive but true for sculpting: many working creature artists use a screenless pen tablet, not a fancy pen display. You constantly orbit a 3D model rather than tracing fixed lines, so drawing "directly on the art" matters far less than in 2D illustration — and a flat display makes your hand cover the model and makes you hunch. A screenless tablet keeps the monitor at eye level, and it's cheaper and tougher.
